Holiday Daily Mix #5--DJ Kemit--The Gift Pt. 3

Tonight is NYE and I'm going to my hometown of Atlanta to celebrate! Super excited to go to the Afrotopia event and see this guy DJ. His name is DJ Kemit.

We have featured Kemit once before on Mode.Radio in 2014 and lots of people enjoyed it. So I figured as a warm up to your NYE, a little deep house music for you.

Kemit's bio is varied. Originally from Milwaukee, he started in the entertainment industry while at Howard University. He started working with Atlanta's own Arrested Development, where he later became a DJ for their shows. He later helped produce their second album. He moved to Atlanta and began DJing around town. He's been a DJ for over 20 years.

In addition Kemit has maintain his production skills. His latest triumph was "4Evermore" by Anthony David, which became a number 1 song on the Adult Urban Charts and one of President Obama's favorite songs, causing them to invite Anthony David to a White House event.

Currently, Kemit has his debut album out "Everlasting" with tracks from great singers such as Frank McComb, Eric Roberson and more.

Enjoy this Daily mix (only 2 more to go!) and happy NYE!!

Holiday Daily Mix #4--Sergio Fedasz--Live at Seattle Eagle, October 2015

I first met Sergio Fedasz in the Bay Area when he was DJing in clubs throughout the city (aka San Francisco), had started a regular night called GO BANG!, and was on KALX 90.7 at UC Berkeley. I featured him 3 times here on Mode.Radio, but I hadn't featured him since 2010 and I figured it was about time. Here's a little info from his Resident Advisor bio:
In 2010, Sergio was voted San Francisco's best DJ by readers of SF Weekly. He creates amazing edits of vintage disco tracks with Allen Craig as The SyntheTigers, and they have begun producing original house music (with disco flourishes) released on their Mirrorball Records label.

I've been following his adventures for a while and once I heard this mix done a couple of months ago, I knew I had to feature it. Enjoy and if you'd like a download, email me at mode.radio@hotmail.com

Holiday Daily Mix #3--Earthtone Sound System @ Honeypot 15 Year Anniversary, Asheville, NC

As a baby raver growing up in Atlanta, I always went to parties hosted by the Earthtone Soundsystem, especially the outdoor parties at Piedmont Park. The collective of DJ's have expanded their love of music (especially disco) to other ventures, but throwing good parties is their first love.

Earthtone Soundsystem is a southeast DJ Collective with deep roots in the DIY free party movement of the early 90's. For over 15 years, Earthtone has hosted daytime park parties, late night warehouse parties, and has held numerous residencies at local clubs and galleries all over the southeastern  US.

This mix was done in Asheville, NC a couple of weeks ago and features tracks from Rodney Hunter, Discotron and more. Enjoy and if you want to download it, email at mode.radio@hotmail.com

Holiday Daily Mix #2--The Martin Brothers--"Rainy Sunrise" Drum n Bass Mix

A couple of years ago, I was in a magazine shop in Oakland and bought a copy of Mixmag. If you know Mixmag, there's always a CD attached to it. This particular day in April 2013, the CD was Claude VonStroke mixing tracks from this Dirtybird label. The CD was called the "Dirtybird Players" and it was lovely, funky house goodness. So as I was coming up with the next daily mix, I stumbled upon two of the Dirtybird artists, Justin and Christian Martin, aka Dirtybird OGs or The Martin Brothers. It was a d'n'b mix and from a memorable label, so I decided to download it.

You won't be disappointed.

This set was done earlier this year at the DirtyBird Campout in SoCal and just released 6 days ago. They even did a Yule Log video on Vimeo with it playing in the background. There's no tracklisting, but it's enjoyable. Happy Holidays!

Holiday Daily Mix#1--12/27/15--Osmose--LIVE inna fine style

This week only, Mode.Radio is featuring a mix everyday as a present to our fans. Our first feature is from one of Mode.Radio's favorite DJ's, Osmose. I have known Osmose since the early 2000's and the type of mixes that I fell the most in love with were is dub/reggae/roots mixes. So when I was looking at the Mode.Radio Soundcloud group and saw this mix that he did in November 2015, I was very excited.

Rocksteady. Reggae. Roots. Dub. Loveliness. Enjoy and download!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #51--JBoogie--Treehouse Mix on Dublab

One of my favorite DJ's is JBoogie from San Francisco. This OM Records artists is a curator of groovy beats and I frequently download many of his live sets that he features on his blog, http://dubtronicscience.blogspot.com, or links from other music blogs.

We have featured a couple of mixes from JBoogie over the years so if you have listened to Mode.Radio, you'd know him. However, what many people don't know is that JBoogie is also heard on Pandora radio every day. He's the curator of Pandora's hip-hop, r&b, soul, and reggae stations. SO all those gems that you have heard on Pandora recently have come from him.

This mix was done for the podcast Dublab and their show Treehouse. It's a lovely set that is soulful and takes you to many places. Enjoy the set and watch JBoogie's interview about his Pandora work below.

Our Present to you! Happy Holidays from Mode.Radio!

It's Holiday Break and now that Christmas is over, I have more time to add some great mixes to this blog. I have found and received so many in the past couple weeks that I've decided to feature them everyday this week here on Mode.Radio. So this week only, we'll have our usual weekly mix, our Radio Ready mix on Jan. 1, and now our Holiday Daily Mix. I'll try and make sure that the daily mixes are downloadable, but if they are not, you can email at mode.radio@hotmail.com for download links.

Enjoy!

Mode.Radio Weekly Mix #48--Satoshi Tomiie--Live Mix at Dommune (Tokyo) May 2015

I have loved Satoshi Tomiie since I discovered electronic music in the 90's. Most of the world first knew about him around that same time with his track "Tears" that he produced with the great Frankie Knuckles. The Japanese born, NYC/Paris based DJ, Producer, Label Boss has been tearing up floors and inspiring many DJs and artists for a very long time.

After a 2 year break, Tomiie has come back with his latest album "New Day." This mix was done at the release party for that album at the great Dommune club in Tokyo. Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #46--Erykah Badu--Feel Better, World!

Some of you may know that Ms. Erykah Badu is not only a world renown artist, but she's also a DJ :) Known by the alias of DJ Fat Belly Bella and Low Down Loretta Brown, Badu has been DJing out for many years. This mix was done 2 months ago after all the bad events happening to African-Americans here in the states. This mix is meant to empower and soothe the soul. As the Dallas Observer said "Badu dug deep for an 80-minute mix called "Feel Better, World!" that uses a selection of tracks by Donny Hathaway, Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder and a host of others (including Badu herself) to paint some kind of image of hope. It starts dark and dissonant, clattering through Gary Bartz's avant jazz and James Brown's bleak "King Heroin" before making its way towards some kind of light at the end of the tunnel, where Hathaway suggests that "some day we'll all be free." Of course, Badu put it pretty succinctly herself when she posted the mix to Mixcloud over the weekend: "ALL OVER THE GLOBE...KEEP WALKING TALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS. SOMEDAY WE WILL ALL BE FREE. THE WORLD IS IN NEED OF HEALING.... I CAREFULLY AND LOVINGLY SELECTED HIGH FREQUENCY TONES FOR THE SOUL.... PLEASE LISTEN FROM TOP TO BOTTOM.
LOVE, ms. badu."

Enjoy and look out for her next mixtape soon. There's a track floating around the net of her covering Drake's "Hotline Bling" that's really hot.

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #45--Stan Zeff--Live at Music Room Atlanta, March 2015

Happy Labor Day Weekend! I'm a little sad this weekend because I wasn't able to make to Atlanta's annual House in the Park event yesterday. I had plans, but as with most Labor Day weekends, friends come in town and such.

What's House in the Park? It's an annual event featuring the best house DJs in the South, nationally, and Internationally. It started in Atlanta in 2005, and has grown to massive heights in the past 10 years.

So to cure my sadness, for the weekly mixes, I'm going to feature the deep house music that was played yesterday at the park during the month of September. My first artist is Stan Zeff.

Stan Zeff was born in London and currently lives in Atlanta. He frequently DJs throughout the states and in England. He's a part of the Tambor Party crew, playing shows in Atlanta, NYC, Detroit, Miami, and more.

This mix was done at Music Room 327 in Atlanta in March. There;s no tracklisting but it's full of deep house goodness.

Enjoy!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #44--Larry Levan Love at Sound Factory, 1991

You can't claim to be a house head and NOT know Larry Levan. This legend dominated the NYC scene with hos regular gigs at Paradise Garage, causing many of his fans to refer to his sets as "Saturday Mass." Even though Larry passed away 23 years ago, several of his mixes still are played and replayed to show what a true house music set was.

Levan started out in the early 70's playing disco with Frankie Knuckles in many a NYC underground club. In 1977, he started his residency at Paradise Garage. He stayed at Paradise Garage until it closed in 1987. Levan was also a remixer, remixing such classics as "Ain't Nothin' Goin On But The Rent" by Gwen Guthrie and "Heartbeat" by Taana Gardner. Just as he was making a comeback in the early 90's with remixes and sets for Ministry of Sound, he passed away of a heart condition in 1992.

This set was recorded in New York in 1991. There's no tracklisting but it's a solid set.

Enjoy!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #42--DJ Bone--In Session Mix for Mixmag

Hello!
It's back to school here in Nashville and I figured that would be a good time to get back to a genre that I don't feature very much here on Mode.Radio, techno.

DJ Bone is a Detroit techno DJ and is considered an independent, visionary, true-school DJ. DJ Bone has held a residency at four of Detroit's top clubs and produces music inspired by the city in which he hales from, Detroit. His record label is called Subject Detroit

Bone experienced the emotion, passion and energy of Detroit Techno first hand at the infamous Music Institute. What he witnessed there would serve to be Bone's main influences.

Bone began his DJ career spinning groundbreaking sets weekly at The Love Club (The Shelter). From there he gained a dedicated following which eventually led to him playing at three different clubs five nights a week, as well as several underground parties in Detroit. An invitation to provide fortnightly, live mixes for the Deep Space Radio show on 107.5 in Detroit was also extended.

After hearing Bone in Detroit (1996 Love Club Anniversary Party), Laurent Garnier booked him to headline at the Rex Club in Paris. Soon after word spread and Bone was invited to play events all over Europe.

In late 1997, Bone began his residency at the Motor Lounge in Hamtramck (bordering Detroit on all sides) pioneering an underground Detroit Techno night. Within a month, the number of Bone's weekly session attendees topped 1,000 as well as tens of thousands of others tuning in to his live set broadcast on the radio in Detroit every Friday from midnight until 2 am (87.9 FM). He stayed at Motor for three years.

Now DJ Bone is very busy running Subject Detroit and DJ out in Europe and the US. This set was done for Mixmag in July, 2015. You can follow DJ Bone and learn more info about him on his website, http://dj-bone.com/.. Enjoy!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #41--Crockett & Tubbz (DJ AppleJac and DJ Jaycee)--The Mixtapes Vol. 1 & 2

If you grew up in the 80's and 90's, these two guys above were the coolest characters on TV. Crockett and Tubbs from NBC's "Miami Vice" were slick undercover cops who brought pastels and 2 day old stubble in style.

That slick style is what DJ's AppleJac and Jaycee of Atlanta are bringing in their mixtape series "Crockett and Tubbz." They have done two mixes and we have them both here on Mode.Radio (since we haven't done a post most of this month). We last featured DJ AppleJac in January, 2012 with this mix. Here's a little info about the mixes and DJ's:
"There are some things that just go together perfectly. Peanut butter and jelly. Lemon and lime. Vodka and orange juice. Those pairings may all be of the food and beverage variety, but something more SoulBounce's speed is the joining together of DJ homies Applejac and DJ Jaycee who've united as Dunny Crockett and Reekardo Tubbz for Crockett & Tubbz: The Mixtape, Vol. 1. The Atlanta-based turntable masters have been friends for over 20 years and are two experienced DJs who've performed together and solo extensively at home and across the country and world. With a wink and nod to the Miami Vice characters from whom they borrowed their new nicknames, Applejac and Jaycee came up with the concept of Crockett & Tubbz to celebrate the sounds of the 1980s banging everything from R&B and pop to soul, funk, hip hop and more"

There's no playlist for Crockett & Tubbz: The Mixtape, Vol. 1 because Dunny and Reekardo wanted to keep it a surprise, but you'll find choice cuts on here from Sade, George Michael, Prince and many more throwback favorites

For Volume 2 of this series, Dunny Crockett (Applejac) and Reekardo Tubbz (Jaycee) have returned with another dose of the same, from Billy Ocean to Billy Joel.

Enjoy both these mixes!

Weekly Mix #40--DJ Marky--Fabriclive Promo Mix--June 2015

This has been one crazy week. Personally, I went to the Bay Area, came back, and went to visit fam bam in Kansas City 3 days later. Nationally, there was a horrific murder in Charleston, SC and Same Sex marriage became law. Regionally (here in the southern US), the Confederate flag started to be taken down., starting in Alabama of all places.

So what does this have to do with the mix I'm featuring today. Nothing. BUT...

I have been listening to it hard core this week. It helped me zone out when I was angry and numb about Charleston and helped me celebrate that my friends and family can now marry.

This is just a good Drum 'n' Bass mix.

We haven't featured a mix by DJ Marky since 2011. This was featured on Fabric London's Soundcloud page as a promo for an appearance Marky did at Fabric Live on June 12. The Brazilian based Marky has been DJ for over 25 years and has his own radio show and podcast, amongst other things. Check out his profile here on Resident Advisor.

BTW, this is NOT a 3 hour set. He was doing a 3 hour set at the live event on June 12th.

Enjoy!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #39--Prefuse 73--FACT Mix 496

I remember meeting Scott Herren, aka Prefuse 73, many times in Atlanta in the early 2000's. It's funny, a guy you know from regular coffee shop meetings would have been such an accomplished artist. He was a local musician and DJ in the Atlanta hip-hop and electronica scene, making some big moves to go beyond Atlanta. Born in Miami, raised in Atlanta, and currently living in Atlanta, Barcelona, and New York, Scott's specialty is sampling and incorporating those sounds into music. He also started the group, Delarosa & Asora. He has quite a few albums and EPs under his various groups and this year he has put out 3 sets, an album called "Rivington Nao Rio" and 2 EP's "Forsyth Gardens" and "Every Color of Darkness."

One of my best memories of Scott was seeing him in Berkeley at the Greek Theatre. Since I'm vacationing in the Bay Area this week, I wanted to see what he was doing and if there were any mixes out there. I found this one on FACT magazine's Soundcloud from May of this year. Listening to it on the plane, I enjoyed it and it's one of my favorite chill mixes this year. Enjoy this mix and read more about Scott here or on his website: http://prefuse73.biz.

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #37--B.Blu--Houseworks 88.5FM Marathon set with Levi and Ron Pullman

Who is this woman in the picture above? It's B.Blu and soon you will know who she is. B.Blu, aka Betty Arboleda, has been a major influence as a radio host since 2000. Her specialty is as a DJ promoting Latin music, specifically rock en Espanol, but she is also known as a promoter of electronica music. B.Blu worked at WRAS 88.5FM Atlanta for many years, hosting "Mundo Latino" and "Houseworks." This mix was done in 2000 on that radio station with the great Atlanta deep house DJ, Ron Pullman, and DJ Levi. It's great for late night, getting ready for the club! Radio Ready--Osmose--Kiss of Life Sade Vinyl Tribute

For this episode of Radio Ready, we are featuring our old friend, DJ Osmose from Athens/Atlanta/Chattanooga area. Osmose has done several mixes for Mode.Radio, most notably his "Smoker's Lounge" collection. I've known Osmose for over 10 years and have seen him grown as a DJ. He specializes in bringing all sounds through vinyl, including roots reggae, disco, and more. In 2001, he sent me a mix he did totally dedicated to the music of Sade. This mix is an updated version of that mix with new remixes. There's no tracklisting, but if you are a Sade fan, you'll know the tracks. Enjoy!
