Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #65--Greg Wilson--Live at Music Room Atlanta May 2016

The past two weeks I've been driving from Nashville to Atlanta tending to my father's medical issues. It's a short trip compared to coming from Oakland to Atlanta and it gives a lot of time to think and listen to music. So this weekend for my drive I download this mix from my friends at The Music Room in Atlanta. This was a mix done during their 2 year anniversary event in May of this year and it's....sexy.

Very sexy, Disco sexy...just damn sexy.

The DJ is Greg Wilson. A legend in the electro scene since the 1980's and from Manchester, England, Greg has been heavily influenced by soul and disco and responsible for producing soul and hip-hop tracks in the 80's and 90's. He recently began to document the history and current state black music in England on his website ElectroFunkRoots and currently runs a blog called Being a DJ.

I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I did :)

Holiday Daily Mix #4--Sergio Fedasz--Live at Seattle Eagle, October 2015

I first met Sergio Fedasz in the Bay Area when he was DJing in clubs throughout the city (aka San Francisco), had started a regular night called GO BANG!, and was on KALX 90.7 at UC Berkeley. I featured him 3 times here on Mode.Radio, but I hadn't featured him since 2010 and I figured it was about time. Here's a little info from his Resident Advisor bio:
In 2010, Sergio was voted San Francisco's best DJ by readers of SF Weekly. He creates amazing edits of vintage disco tracks with Allen Craig as The SyntheTigers, and they have begun producing original house music (with disco flourishes) released on their Mirrorball Records label.

I've been following his adventures for a while and once I heard this mix done a couple of months ago, I knew I had to feature it. Enjoy and if you'd like a download, email me at mode.radio@hotmail.com

Holiday Daily Mix #3--Earthtone Sound System @ Honeypot 15 Year Anniversary, Asheville, NC

As a baby raver growing up in Atlanta, I always went to parties hosted by the Earthtone Soundsystem, especially the outdoor parties at Piedmont Park. The collective of DJ's have expanded their love of music (especially disco) to other ventures, but throwing good parties is their first love.

Earthtone Soundsystem is a southeast DJ Collective with deep roots in the DIY free party movement of the early 90's. For over 15 years, Earthtone has hosted daytime park parties, late night warehouse parties, and has held numerous residencies at local clubs and galleries all over the southeastern  US.

This mix was done in Asheville, NC a couple of weeks ago and features tracks from Rodney Hunter, Discotron and more. Enjoy and if you want to download it, email at mode.radio@hotmail.com

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #41--Crockett & Tubbz (DJ AppleJac and DJ Jaycee)--The Mixtapes Vol. 1 & 2

If you grew up in the 80's and 90's, these two guys above were the coolest characters on TV. Crockett and Tubbs from NBC's "Miami Vice" were slick undercover cops who brought pastels and 2 day old stubble in style.

That slick style is what DJ's AppleJac and Jaycee of Atlanta are bringing in their mixtape series "Crockett and Tubbz." They have done two mixes and we have them both here on Mode.Radio (since we haven't done a post most of this month). We last featured DJ AppleJac in January, 2012 with this mix. Here's a little info about the mixes and DJ's:
"There are some things that just go together perfectly. Peanut butter and jelly. Lemon and lime. Vodka and orange juice. Those pairings may all be of the food and beverage variety, but something more SoulBounce's speed is the joining together of DJ homies Applejac and DJ Jaycee who've united as Dunny Crockett and Reekardo Tubbz for Crockett & Tubbz: The Mixtape, Vol. 1. The Atlanta-based turntable masters have been friends for over 20 years and are two experienced DJs who've performed together and solo extensively at home and across the country and world. With a wink and nod to the Miami Vice characters from whom they borrowed their new nicknames, Applejac and Jaycee came up with the concept of Crockett & Tubbz to celebrate the sounds of the 1980s banging everything from R&B and pop to soul, funk, hip hop and more"

There's no playlist for Crockett & Tubbz: The Mixtape, Vol. 1 because Dunny and Reekardo wanted to keep it a surprise, but you'll find choice cuts on here from Sade, George Michael, Prince and many more throwback favorites

For Volume 2 of this series, Dunny Crockett (Applejac) and Reekardo Tubbz (Jaycee) have returned with another dose of the same, from Billy Ocean to Billy Joel.

Enjoy both these mixes!

Radio Ready--Ladymode--Snowbound Part 1

Greetings all!
I've been away this past month, vacationing around the area and having visitors during my Spring Break, but now I'm back with a new Radio Ready. It's been a while but I wanted to drop this mix I did in February called "Snowbound." I actually did 4 Snowbound mixes, which I will feature throughout this year.

"Snowbound" comes from being snowbound here in Nashville during February and March with nothing to do, especially when my daughter was napping. So I got some tunes together, played around with a couple of DJ apps, and created these mixes. The tracks kind of go all over the place, ranging from disco and soul to Hip-Hop and Electronica. Hope you enjoy!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #24--Buttkick--Space Discoteque Vol. 1

We last featured Buttkick on Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #19 in November and he had a wealth of good responses. So we decided to feature one more mix before the year ends out. Here's what Butt Kick says about "Space Discoteque:"_ "This is a recording of my latest broadcast I performed on Mixify.
I've gone for a style I regard as space disco for this one, quite deep and cosmic in places, plenty of synths.
The highlighted track for this week is "Dim Sum - Coucoud Disco (Lifelike Remix)" - quality track on the Soundress label.
Other tracks I've featured are by the likes are Matt Hughes, Ben Macklin, Ray Mang, Andy Hart and others."
Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #23--Ladyeve--Rollerjam

Ladyeve, or DJ Eve has been a good friend of Mode.Radio since 1997 when I was working at WRAS Atlanta 88.5 FM. Eve was the host of a show called "Planet8," which was one of my first forays into electronica. Eve has moved from Atlanta to Canada and now to Mexico. Mode.Radio has featured Eve on this blog 4 times, the last time being 2011. So when we found this link to her 19th annual Xmas mix and loved the disco jams and decided to bring it to our fans. Expect the usual disco fare, starting with "All over the World" by Electric Light Orchestra, going into "Let's Groove" by Earth, Wind, and Fire, and then getting into funk nu-disco jams. As she says about the mix: "Mixed as the ideal soundtrack for the roller rink extravaganza in my heart. Made with joy for my long time friends that have brought me happiness on this journey of life music."

Enjoy....

Giorgio Moroder--Live at Deep Space, May 20, 2013

Giorgio Moroder is a legend. For those younger than 40 ;) Moroder was the major producer for such disco artists as Donna Summer and movie soundtracks including "Scarface." When I saw this link from Tommie Sunshine regarding Moroder's first EVER DJ mix, I tried to download it. However, the site hosting it, Red Bull Music Academy Radio, has it on lock. So I decided to post it here to listen to, and hopefully, someone will get an mp3 (and tracklisting) out on it soon! Here's the bio on Giorgio Moroder from the Red Bull Music Academy Radio site:

"One of the true greats of disco and electronic music, Giorgio Moroder brought a very European aesthetic to black American dance grooves. Althoughttp://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1086580549668754664#editor/target=post;postID=8002954432563759279h Italian by upbringing, Moroder did most of his work in Munich and the influence of Düsseldorf’s Kraftwerk can be heard in his work for Donna Summer, which includes two of the ultimate disco anthems, I Feel Love and Love To Love You Baby. This was motorik music: spacious, trippy, ever-lasting, far removed from the relentless bounce of most disco. Giorgio Moroder is also a supreme composer of soundtracks, scoring an unlikely success with The Chase, the theme from Midnight Express, and his footprints are all over British synth-pop, from Pet Shop Boys to New Order to Human League. It was with the latter’s Phil Oakey that he got his biggest self-credited hit in 1984, Together In Electric Dreams."

Enjoy!

Radio Ready--Mode.Radio's 3 Year anniversary Mix--Ladymode (MsE), NYE 2010/11 Jam

So I don't claim to be a DJ. I love DJs and electronica music, (why I created Mode.Radio), but me a DJ...um no.

However, Mode.Radio started out as me experimenting and making DJ mixes (called 3AM, 4AM, and 5AM respectively) and re-broadcasting episodes of the Atlanta radio show "Subterranean." So I thought that it would be appropriate, for Mode. Radio's 3 year anniversary, to bring it back to the beginning and feature a mixed set.

This all-Disco, danceable, funkiness set was done NYE 2010/2011 at a loft party in San Francisco. The host, DKhan, and hostess, eMber, are long time friends of mine and I hope to feature them in future Mode.Radio episodes. Until then, enjoy!
