Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #25--DJ Cullen Cole--Private Session

According to DJ Cullen Cole's bio, it all started in the early 1980’s with his parents dropping him off at his first roller rink where Cullen Cole got his first taste of disco, soul, and house. It's a great start to a great career from this Atlanta-based, house DJ. It wasn't long before he was Djing at the rink himself, as well as other local Atlanta clubs, where he was introduced to the original house sounds of Chicago and Detroit. Newly inspired by this fresh sound, he quickly found himself frequenting Atlanta hotspots like 688 Spring St., Velvet, Masquerade, The Warehouse and Sol Nightclub, where he bonded with fellow house music lover, and Chicago transplant Tommie Sunshine. The duo ran Atlanta record shop Satellite Records for many years, causing Cullen to expand his musical armory. This new role only further fueled his desire to embrace all aspects of the electronic music scene. Starting his first residency in 1997, Cullen has brought DJ's and groups such as Derrick Carter,  Larry Heard, Charles Webster, DJ Spinna, Peven Everett, ?uest Love, Ron Trent, Jazzanova, Omar, Kerri Chandler, Rich Medina, Tortured Soul, and many more. An open-minded and diverse DJ, Cullen's music is constantly innovating, presenting the classic sounds of Disco, House, Funk and Soul to Atlanta’s dancefloors. Going back to his roots with the quarterly "Adult Skate" parties, Cullen Cole is one of the last original jocks to play a strictly all-vinyl format.

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #24--Buttkick--Space Discoteque Vol. 1

We last featured Buttkick on Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #19 in November and he had a wealth of good responses. So we decided to feature one more mix before the year ends out. Here's what Butt Kick says about "Space Discoteque:"_ "This is a recording of my latest broadcast I performed on Mixify.
I've gone for a style I regard as space disco for this one, quite deep and cosmic in places, plenty of synths.
The highlighted track for this week is "Dim Sum - Coucoud Disco (Lifelike Remix)" - quality track on the Soundress label.
Other tracks I've featured are by the likes are Matt Hughes, Ben Macklin, Ray Mang, Andy Hart and others."
Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #23--Ladyeve--Rollerjam

Ladyeve, or DJ Eve has been a good friend of Mode.Radio since 1997 when I was working at WRAS Atlanta 88.5 FM. Eve was the host of a show called "Planet8," which was one of my first forays into electronica. Eve has moved from Atlanta to Canada and now to Mexico. Mode.Radio has featured Eve on this blog 4 times, the last time being 2011. So when we found this link to her 19th annual Xmas mix and loved the disco jams and decided to bring it to our fans. Expect the usual disco fare, starting with "All over the World" by Electric Light Orchestra, going into "Let's Groove" by Earth, Wind, and Fire, and then getting into funk nu-disco jams. As she says about the mix: "Mixed as the ideal soundtrack for the roller rink extravaganza in my heart. Made with joy for my long time friends that have brought me happiness on this journey of life music."

Enjoy....

Radio Ready--Ron Pullman--Live Set, November 7, 2014

It has been so long since I've featured Ron Pullman on Mode.Radio. At first I thought it was since 2012, but looking back at my archives, I hadn't featured Ron since 2010! Check out his last set here. When I received this email about his latest mix, I listen to it and loved it. It was done at the Atlanta Eagle on November 7 of this year and it features remixes and tracks from Jennifer Hudson, Anita Baker, Al Green and more. Enjoy this mix!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mixes #21--KevinO--Live and Direct

Aah, Mr. Kevin Owens, aka DJ KevinO...One of the hardest working DJs, now a papa, in the Southern US. A good friend of Mode.Radio, we have featured Kevin plenty of times, the latest being his mix he did last year for a Halloween party. I figured for the Thanksgiving holiday week, Mode.Radio fans may need something to shake the turkey/holiday away. This mix was literally done "live and direct" at an Atlanta event and features truly groove filled rhythms in this 2 hour set. Again, no tracklisting, but after you listen, you care. You can check out mixes from Kevin and his crew at www.deephouse.com. Enjoy!

Mode.Radio Weekly Mix #20--Osmose--Live at The Georgia Theatre Rooftop, Bootsy Collins afterparty

For our weekly mix, Mode.Radio is featuring a very dear friend of this blog, DJ Osmose!

I first met Osmose in Atlanta when I was working at WRAS 88.5 FM. He always had these amazing house, reggae, and dub mixes, some of which I still listen to today. Through our friendship, Osmose has played out in the SF Bay Area, plus in Hawaii, Mexico, and many other places. Now based in Athens, GA, Osmose has started his own label, Smokecloud Records and has maintained regular dates in Atlanta and Athens. This mix is from is rooftop sessions at the world-famous Georgia Theater in Athens. It was for a Bootsy Collins afterparty back in August of this year, so you know it has to be funky! Enjoy the rhythms and vibes!

Radio Ready--DJ Eko--Soultronica Vol. 6

Hello Mode.Radio fans! Radio Ready is back after a LONG hiatus! Thanks to those that have been keeping up with this blog as I have moved, had to get a new computer, got a new job, etc.

For this latest episode of Radio Ready, I went back to a DJ I had featured in February, DJ Eko. I had originally discovered her through a couple of my Burning Man friends and I posted her mix for RecessNYC. Loved her, communicated with her through her Twitter and wanted more mixes.

Her inspiration for this mix actually comes from Burningman 2014. Eko says: Since this year I was unable to sound-captain artcar gliding across the desert I took the sensation of unfulfilled expression and encapsulated it in Soultronica Vol.6. I enjoy being clever. The mix came together organically around our Burningman themes and is chalked full of secret-society catch phrases and glimmerings of shared magic and symbolism

So here is her latest Soultronica Vol 6. Look at the tracklisting and get excited, because this mix is going to be fun! Enjoy!

Mode.Radio Weekly Mix #18--DJ Kemit--House in the Park 2014

One of my favorite events in my home town, Atlanta, is the annual "House in the Park" that happens on Labor Day weekend. Atlanta's best deep house DJs and DJs from all over the country and world come through to spin for this all day event that brings old heads, new heads, friends and family together in a park in downtown Atlanta.

One of the godfathers of Atlanta's house scene is DJ Kemit. According to his Mixcloud: "DJ Kemit is the creator of “4Evermore,” the No. 1 Adult Urban Contemporary song that put Anthony David on the Obamas’ radar. It put David on the map, too, with his first Top 20 R&B hit.

After decades of DJing, touring the world, and moving innumerable crowds with his signature sound, DJ KEMIT’s unparalleled production chops had caught the attention of the globe’s most powerful couple."

Enjoy!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mixes #16--Levente--Munich Sessions 7.0 from Ibiza

Levente is a Hungarian producer who has ties to San Francisco. His track "Tumbling" was featured on Renaissance's The Masters Series with Nick Warren in 2013. He has a regular mix show on Deep House Parade Radio called the "Munich Sessions." This is the 7th episode in the series, uploaded 10 days ago. Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #15--Silicone Soul--20 years of Subculture Mix

Greetings!
It was a tough decision for this week's mix. I had a choice between 3 mixes, all of which were really innovative. But this mix kept bringing me back and making my head nod. It also helped that it was only 2 weeks old. :)

Silicone Soul is a house music production team from Glasgow, Scotland and have released 5 albums since 2000. This mix they did for legendary Glasgow club, Subculture, which celebrated its 20 year anniversary this past weekend. This mix is full of lovely house rhythms, with tracks from Maceo, Audion, Daniel Avery, and more. Enjoy!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #14--Basecamp--Guest Mix for BBC's Radio 1

Our weekly mixes are back after a summer hiatus. I have made the long move from Oakland to Nashville during the month of July. So, it seemed appropriate to feature a Nashville based group. Basecamp.

Basecamp is 3 members: Aaron Miller, Aaron Harmon, and Jordan Reyes. They were all individually producers until the came together to write and produce. Their first track, "Emmanuel," has received a lot of attention in the EDM scene.

Basecamp started in Nashville and been producing remixes and tracks for quite a while. Their genre is mainly r&b and house, but they've gotten some international acclaim with their self-titled EP put out August 2013 and their mix for BBC's Radio 1 at the beginning of this year. It's that mix that we are featuring now. Enjoy! Also learn more about Basecamp from their Facebook

Mode. Radio Weekly Mix #13--Kryptonica DJs--The Journey--Chillout

Summer is coming...It's not too hot and not to cool and I figured this would be a great time to get a chill relax mix for those warm days. Kryptonica Sonya and Kryptonica Cesar together we are called Kryptonica djs. They are from Milan, but they started their dj career in London back in the 90's.
Their independent label is called "KRYPTOFABBRIKK RECORDS"  and their style is normally indie, house, and tech house, so this chill mix is a departure. Enjoy!

Getting ready for a big move and dealing with the end of my school year..

Hey Mode.Radio Fans!
Seems like I've been apologizing for delays in updating this blog since my daughter was born. I guess life really does change when you have kids, but one thing that hasn't is my love for electronic music. I'm planning on continuing to maintain this blog as long as I can with the latest in good music.

Well, y'all, another change is coming next month...I'm moving. Mode.Radio and myself will be moving to Nashville TN for my husband's job relocation. As a ATL girl, I'm super excited to get back closer to home. Plus this move is closer to my husband's family. But I'm also sad because the Bay Area is an amazing, beautiful place. It was an adjustment living here at first, but after a while, the crazy, beautiful Bay became my home. To be honest, though, you've got to pay to play here and sometimes the price is very high...

I'm dealing with this as school (teaching is my real job) is ending in a couple of weeks. Mentally I'm in summer mode now and have spent hours picking out and listening to some amazing mixes. Look out for links to mixes from my Soundcloud group, some (really good) mixes from some Nashville DJs, (maybe) a good bye Bay Area mix, and some returns of old favorites.

Summertime...where the living is easy :)

Greetings Mode.Radio Fans!
It's been a couple of weeks because I've been on a whirlwind Spring Break trip to AZ, GA, and TN with a 2 year old. Marinate on the drama for a sec....

Mode. Radio Weekly Mix (Special Episode) #11--Frankie Knuckles--Boiler Room NYC Mix

Many of you may have heard the shocking news yesterday (or today) of the death of House music legend, Frankie Knuckles. Frankie died at age 59 from complications from type 2 diabetes. Up until his death, Frankie was still very active in the house music scene. A little bio on his life from Wikipedia:

"Frankie Knuckles (January 18, 1955 – March 31, 2014) was an American DJ, record producer, and remixer. He was born Francis Nicholls in the Bronx borough of New York City and later moved to Chicago. He played an important role in developing and popularizing house music in Chicago during the 1980s when the genre was in its infancy. In 2005, Knuckles was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame for his achievements.
Due to his importance in the development of the genre, Knuckles was often known as "The Godfather of House Music",and as such the city of Chicago named a stretch of street and a day after Knuckles in 2004. In 2005, Frankie was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame."
One of his songs that always got me twisted on the dance floor was "The Whistle Song." Listen to it here:

This weekly mix we are featuring comes from Bolier Room and it was released on May 2013 in NYC. Respect, Enjoy,  and RIP....

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #10--Deep Dish--Essential Mix/March 22, 2014

As many old scenesters/ravers may understand, there's one website that you always go on for links to DJ mixes. Everybody has one. Mine is lunarmagazine.com. I have friends on there and I was put on this mix by one of them.

If you don't already know, Deep Dish are a duo of DJs and house-music producers consisting of Iranian-American members Ali "Dubfire" Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi. Based in Washington, D.C., they are well known for providing house or dance remixes of tracks of famous stars such as MadonnaJanet JacksonCher and Gabrielle, and for their live DJing sets. Their collaborations and remixing abilities first came to attention with their seminal 1995 remix of De'Lacy's "Hideaway." Deep Dish's album Junk Science was released in 1998. The duo was nominated for a Grammy for Madonna's "Music," and won a "Best Remixed Recording" Grammy for their remix of Dido's "Thank You."[1] In 2006, the DJs disbanded and moved to solo careers. They have recently regrouped, and have released a new single "Quincy"

This BBC Radio 1 Essential mix was the first time the duo have DJed together on the radio show since 2003. I fell in love with it and it's been on my playlist for the month of March.
Enjoy this great mix!
