Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #61--Mark Farina--Timetable Mix, March 2016

Mode.Radio is back!

It's been a very busy April for me with work stuff, radio (wxnafm.org) stuff, and family/kid stuff, but I'm back with one of my eternal favorite DJ's.

I present to you DJ Mark Farina.

We have featured Mark sooo many times on Mode.Radio. But in case you forgot, Mark is originally from Chicago but is most connected with San Francisco since he moved there in the 90's and brought its cool vibe to house music. He's most well known for his "Mushroom Jazz" series, which there will (hopefully) be a Mushroom Jazz 8 coming this year. "Mushroom Jazz" is also celebrating its 25 anniversary so Mark is out touring in support.

This mix is a new house mix that came out last month, with a lot of underground tracks. There's no tracklisting, but this is so worth a listen!

Mode. Radio Weekly Mix (Special Episode) #11--Frankie Knuckles--Boiler Room NYC Mix

Many of you may have heard the shocking news yesterday (or today) of the death of House music legend, Frankie Knuckles. Frankie died at age 59 from complications from type 2 diabetes. Up until his death, Frankie was still very active in the house music scene. A little bio on his life from Wikipedia:

"Frankie Knuckles (January 18, 1955 – March 31, 2014) was an American DJ, record producer, and remixer.He was born Francis Nicholls in the Bronx borough of New York City and later moved to Chicago. He played an important role in developing and popularizing house music in Chicago during the 1980s when the genre was in its infancy. In 2005, Knuckles was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame for his achievements.

Due to his importance in the development of the genre, Knuckles was often known as "The Godfather of House Music",and as such the city of Chicago named a stretch of street and a day after Knuckles in 2004. In 2005, Frankie was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame."

The Stash 38--Miles Maeda--Painting, Side 1

One of my favorite House Music cassettes (yes, I said cassettes) was Chicago DJ Miles Maeda's "Painting." I bought it in 2001, even though it was recorded in 1997 and I fell in love. I couldn't find anymore of his music, and 6 years later, that cassette wore away. I guess playing it all the time and leaving it in a hot car in Georgia didn't help.

Well, while I was sick last month, I went trolling and found Miles Maeda Mixes.com. There Miles had all of his past and current mixes, including "Painting." Miles is currently based in Tokyo, Japan. As far as I can tell from his Facebook, he's ok, but there is a link on his Facebook and his website to donate to relief efforts in Japan, so please consider it.

Radio Ready--Osmose--Larry Heard Appreciation Mix

Larry Heard, aka Mr. Fingers, is one of the pioneers of Chicago House Music. With hits including, "Can You Feel It", "Bring Down the Walls" (ft. Robert Owens), "What About this Love," Larry brought an element to the definitive house music sound that we are used to today. As a special treat to Mode.Radio, our friend DJ Osmose blessed us with his mix, the "Larry Heard Appreciation Mix" It's a Larry Heard appreciation mix, but instead of being all Larry Heard tracks it's more in the vein of the feel of a Larry Heard DJ mix...like the monthly's he used to do on the Alleviated Records website a few years back. Debut Series Vol. 29--K.So

Christian Thomas aka K.So, originally a transplant from Chicago, got a taste of dance culture at the age of 16 in some of the up-and-coming clubs of the Windy City. Being exposed to early Chicago house and radio mixes, Christian was immediately smitten. In 1994, Christian moved to Atlanta and discovered it's budding house and club scene at events taking place at 688 Spring Street, the Masquerade, and/or events being promoted by Liquified, Pleasure, and OuterLimits to name a few. K.So has been known to blow up circles, enjoying a battle or 2 on the dance floor, and helping to keep the vibe at parties thick.

Now a DJ of 15 years, K-So's experience as a dancefloor personality have given him the ability to keep heads bouncing and the asses moving. With Kazell (Kevin Bazell) being K-So's main influence over the years, others include many ATL local old-skoolers, nu-skoolers, and friends most notably J-Luv, Nasir, Rick Sierra, Kia, Ulysses, Rob Dowell, Justin Brady, Chris Meadows, and Shortee & Foust and many more. His international influences include LTJ Bukem, Danny Howells, Satoshi Tomiie, Hardware, Micro, Sasha & Digweed, Laurent Garnier, Mark Farina, Doc Martin, DJ Dan, Dubtribe, Stanton Warriors, Koma and Bones, Plump DJs, Icey, Simply Jeff, Chemical Brothers, Art of Trance/POB/Union Jack, Hardkiss Brothers, Lee Burridge, Quivver, Jimmy Van M, Baby Anne, Sandra Collins, Andy Hughes, Sandy, Carl Cox, Hardware, Kimball Collins, Layo & BushWacka, Hipp-e and Halo, Jimpster, and Timewriter.

K-So specializes mainly in house and tech house and likes to bring it dirty, funky, sexy, nasty, techy, housey, and deep—depends on the spot and the vibe.

The Stash Vol. 14--DJ Celeste Alexander--The Dirty South Mix

Over X-Mas Vacation, I was slipped this CD by a very good friend of mine, Ms. Natalie (shout-out). I fell so in love with the deep Chicago style house rhythms I had to put it on the Stash. This mix was exclusively done from a set she did in Atlanta in October 2009, so there's no tracklisting.

She started in 1982 under the encouragement of Steve "Silk" Hurley, learning how to mix under the tutelage of Andre Hatchett among many others. One of the first female dj's in Chicago, she signed on with Promoter Dave Risque' and Gucci Productions. After the first year of playing exclusively for Dave Risque' and proving that a female DJ Can hold her own in this male dominated industry, opportunities opened up along with her popularity. She has shared the decks over the years with dj's such as: Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Steve Hurley, Andre Hatchett, Craig Loftus, Greg Gray, Boo Williams, Farley “Jackmaster Funk”, Terry Hunter, Gene Hunt, Wayne Williams, Ron Carroll, Mike Dunn, Greg Gray, Chip E, Tyree Cooper, Glenn Underground, Pharris Thomas and many others.

In July 2007 was given her own Internet Radio Show on Cyberjamz.com. Cyberjamz is the longest running, highest rated internet radio station totally dedicated to house music. Her show The "Celestial Odyssey" runs every Saturday from 1-3pm (cst) and has a quickly become one of the top shows on the station.

The Stash--Tommie Sunshine--Mix for N'Joy Radio--6/29/2007

For our second edition of "The Stash", we feature a set from Tommie Sunshine that he did for N'Joy Radio in Germany. Tommie is well-known as a remixer, producer, vocalist, radio jock, label owner, DJ and songwriter with many albums to his credit. Currently living in Brooklyn, NY and travelling the world, Tommie has previously lived in Atlanta and Chicago, where he had residencies and was involved in the music business locally.
