Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #63--Queen Majesty--Mix for Intermission, May 2016

Sunday mornings at my house consists of my husband cooking breakfast, my kid looking at the comic page and me reading the newspaper listening to a dub mix. Sometimes I listen to WRAS 88.5FM online and sometimes I play DJ Mixes. Today I was looking for a new mix and hit up Recess NYC's Intermission website. I was pleasantly surprised by this mix from Brooklyn's Queen Majesty.

Queen Majesty has been DJing for over 20 years and had two radio shows on East Village Radio, up until 2014. Along with that she's a business owner with her own hot sauce line. Loving this mix and hope it makes any day of your week chill.

Enjoy!

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #56--?uestlove--JDilla Tribute, 2012

This month would have been re-known Hip-Hop producer's JDilla's 42nd birthday. If you don't know, J Dilla, aka Jay Dee, was a producer and MC who worked with such artists as A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, Common, De La Soul, Talib Kweli and more. Dilla died in 2006 of a rare blood disease and lupus.

This mix was done live on NYC's Hot 97 by The Root's ?uestlove. Mixed on the 6th anniversary of Dilla's death, it's an amazing tribute to a great and influential producer.

Enjoy!

Mode.Radio Weekly Mix #48--Satoshi Tomiie--Live Mix at Dommune (Tokyo) May 2015

I have loved Satoshi Tomiie since I discovered electronic music in the 90's. Most of the world first knew about him around that same time with his track "Tears" that he produced with the great Frankie Knuckles. The Japanese born, NYC/Paris based DJ, Producer, Label Boss has been tearing up floors and inspiring many DJs and artists for a very long time.

After a 2 year break, Tomiie has come back with his latest album "New Day." This mix was done at the release party for that album at the great Dommune club in Tokyo. There's no tracklisting for this set, but it's beautiful deep house, chilled goodness. Enjoy and find out more about Satoshi Tomiie at http://www.satoshitomiie.com/

Mode.Radio's Weekly Mix #44--Larry Levan Love at Sound Factory, 1991

You can't claim to be a house head and NOT know Larry Levan. This legend dominated the NYC scene with hos regular gigs at Paradise Garage, causing many of his fans to refer to his sets as "Saturday Mass." Even though Larry passed away 23 years ago, several of his mixes still are played and replayed to show what a true house music set was.

Levan started out in the early 70's playing disco with Frankie Knuckles in many a NYC underground club. In 1977, he started his residency at Paradise Garage. He stayed at Paradise Garage until it closed in 1987. Levan was also a remixer, remixing such classics as "Ain't Nothin' Goin On But The Rent" by Gwen Guthrie and "Heartbeat" by Taana Gardner. Just as he was making a comeback in the early 90's with remixes and sets for Ministry of Sound, he passed away of a heart condition in 1992.

This set was recorded in New York in 1991. There's no tracklisting but it's a solid set.

Enjoy!

Radio Ready--DJ Eko--Soultronica Vol. 6

Hello Mode.Radio fans! Radio Ready is back after a LONG hiatus! Thanks to those that have been keeping up with this blog as I have moved, had to get a new computer, got a new job, etc.

For this latest episode of Radio Ready, I went back to a DJ I had featured in February, DJ Eko. I had originally discovered her through a couple of my Burning Man friends and I posted her mix for RecessNYC. Loved her, communicated with her through her Twitter and wanted more mixes.

Her inspiration for this mix actually comes from Burningman 2014. Eko says: Since this year I was unable to sound-captain artcar gliding across the desert I took the sensation of unfulfilled expression and encapsulated it in Soultronica Vol.6. I enjoy being clever. The mix came together organically around our Burningman themes and is chalked full of secret-society catch phrases and glimmerings of shared magic and symbolism

So here is her latest Soultronica Vol 6. Look at the tracklisting and get excited, because this mix is going to be fun! Enjoy!
