Our latest Stash mix comes from British DJ and Producer, Alex Metric. Alex started getting notices for his producing skills in 2008 and in 2009, he was one of the DJs on BBC's "In New DJs We Trust." He has since left the radio show and has gone to produce tracks for Depeche Mode, Bloc Party, and a new track with Steve Angello called "Open Your Eyes."

The first time I heard of DJ Black Coffee, I was at the New Parish in Oakland, CA at a July 15, 2011 show with OM DJ Marques Wyatt. I thought Marques was the main act, but I was pleasantly surprised when Marques opened for DJ Black Coffee. Ever since then, I have been looking for a really good mix to present on Mode.Radio and I think this is it.

Based in South Africa, Black Coffee (real name: Nkosinathi Maphumulo) has been a rising star in the deep house music scene, producing tracks and dropping great mixes.What makes his DJ style so unique is that Black Coffee is disabled. He lost his hand when he was young. So when you are watching him DJ 3 turntables, cutting rhythms, and hitting deep soulful drops, with one arm, you can't help but to be amazed. Changes in Life, Changes to Mode.Radio

Life is about change, right? Well, here at Mode.Radio, change is happening. Let me tell you why. My personal life has completely changed for the better (more details to come....), so the time that I have to devote to Mode.Radio has become limited. Therefore, Mode.Radio is going back from being bi-weekly to once a month for the rest of this year. There is a possibility that we may go back to being bi-weekly in 2012, but we'll see.

Mode.Radio started out as a once a month podcast back in 2008 and right now, I think this is the best direction for it to go. The good thing about it is that the mixes that will be placed on this blog will be of top quality and the DJs exposed will be very strong. Radio Ready will still feature DJs who either have been on Mode.Radio before or are super good DJs. The Stash will still feature sets that are classics and the Debut Series will still feature up and coming DJs.

I hope that these changes will not affect how much you listen to Mode. As usual: Enjoy!

Radio Ready--Sorted--Seasons Change Vol. 2

The first time (and the last time) we featured Atlanta DJ Sorted was in October 2009. So we thought it was a good time to bring him back.

From his Bio:
Jamie Andersen aka Sorted has been rocking Atlanta dancefloor's for half a decade. Heavily influenced at a young age by nights spent in the notorious London clubs fabric and The End. Sorted came back to the states eager to spread Europe's sounds to the masses.

Bursting on the Atlanta scene in 2005 Sorted quickly joined the http://www.404audio.com crew becoming one of the cities premier Drum and Bass DJ's. Cutting his teeth at the now infamous Transit club nights, Sorted learned the importance of building a vibe, while keeping dancefloor sensibility.

After building a name in Atlanta's underground, Sorted quickly found the need to branch into other genre's. You can hear a mix of House, Indie, and other genres in almost every mix he creates. For now enjoy, DJ Sorted's "Season's Change Vol. 2" recorded December 2010.

The Stash 38--Miles Maeda--Painting, Side 1

One of my favorite House Music cassettes (yes, I said cassettes) was Chicago DJ Miles Maeda's "Painting." I bought it in 2001, even though it was recorded in 1997 and I fell in love. I couldn't find anymore of his music, and 6 years later, that cassette wore away. I guess playing it all the time and leaving it in a hot car in Georgia didn't help.

Well, while I was sick last month, I went trolling and found Miles Maeda Mixes.com. There Miles had all of his past and current mixes, including "Painting." Miles is currently based in Tokyo, Japan. As far as I can tell from his Facebook, he's ok, but there is a link on his Facebook and his website to donate to relief efforts in Japan, so please consider it.

Recorded down in Mexico, it's a rare techno mix from Eve. Eve has done many mixes for us before. Based in Vancouver, Canada, she's an accomplished musician, DJ, and radio personality for such stations as WRAS Atlanta, WABE Atlanta, CBC Vancouver and CFRO Vancouver.

However, Mode.Radio started out as me experimenting and making DJ mixes (called 3AM, 4AM, and 5AM respectively) and re-broadcasting episodes of the Atlanta radio show "Subterranean." So I thought that it would be appropriate, for Mode. Radio's 3 year anniversary, to bring it back to the beginning and feature a mixed set.

This all-Disco, danceable, funkiness set was done NYE 2010/2011 at a loft party in San Francisco. The host, DKhan, and hostess, eMber, are long time friends of mine and I hope to feature them in future Mode.Radio episodes. Until then, enjoy!

One of the first drum 'n' bass DJ that I fell in love with was DJ Marky. My first CD of his that I bought was "The Brazilian Job" in 2001. Ever since then, whenever I see a DJ Marky set on the internet or in the stores, I have to buy it.

In March 2009, I download this set from DJ Marky's website, http://djmarky.uol.com.br/, and It hasn't left my iPod ever since. A very good d'n'b set, it's full of surprises and filled with DJ Marky speaking about tracks he's using.

A little bio: Regarded as a drum’n’bass innovator under the name Marky Mark and then just DJ Marky, Marco Antonio Silva was discovered by English DJ Bryan Gee, who saw Marky playing in a club in São Paulo in 1998. Amazed by Marky’s scratch skills, he invited the DJ to play in London. Marky got started in drum’n’bass in 1992, choosing a more hardcore edge, but the small audiences nearly caused him to give up. At the time, he was told that that kind of music was for only a few. In 1997, he went to London and met DJs Hype and Goldie. The meeting with Brian D was definitive for Marky’s conquering of England. In 1999, he was awarded "Best New DJ" by the British critics. The recording sessions of his album "Working the Mix" happened in his house, with two pick ups, one mixer and vinyl albums. When it was ready, he showed it to moguls at Paradoxx and got lucky.

About 3 months ago, mode.radio got a follower from a fan of DJ Sikora's, Miles Long of Kentucky. It took me a while to listen to it, but when I finally got to it, I was pleasantly surprised. This is really good Drum 'n' Bass/Dubstep collection of created about 3 months ago.

Starting out as an emcee and audio engineer in 2000, Miles met another young producer who introduced him to Daft Punk, and fell in love with Electronic Dance Music. Several years later he purchased his first set of turntables and took to the stage himself, throwing events with other local crews and playing festivals. He has recently started back to school and is attending Full Sail University for Music Production. Back in the fall of 2009, I went to a hip-hop festival in a small park in Berkeley, CA. While there, I met my then-new favorite DJ, J Boogie, who had made an appearance on stage earlier that day. He had just performed in my hometown of Atlanta with KevinO and I told him how I loved where he was taking his music. J Boogie was amazingly cool, humble, and definitely still hustlin' to get his music out there. He hooked me up with this mix, recorded March, 2009 at the Dragon's Den in New Orleans. It definitely is a treat and well worth the listen. Hailing from Atlanta by way of Toronto, Canada, Black Daniels, aka Marcel, has been a figure in Atlanta’s music industry for nearly a decade. He began his journey at the 100,000 watt powerhouse college station, WRAS, as a part of the nationally recognized Weekend Wreckin’ Crew. Under his influence, the station received a slew of nominations and awards during his tenure as Music and Program Director. Black Daniels regularly releases mixtapes highlighting more progressive and avant-garde selections, ranging from Neo Soul to underground Hip Hop. In the clubs, however, he's more likely to mix those selections with other tracks that makes people move.

For this month's Debut Series, we welcome the Electro mix "Welcome to My Dancefloor" by Bassgate. Bassgate is the latest project from DJ/producer Jonathan Wagner, and marks the culmination of the career of an ascending master at his craft. Jonathan’s dossier of clubs and residencies reads like a “Who’s Who” of the nightclub scene. He has has played with some of the game's biggest talent such as Keoki, DJ Icey, Rabbit in the Moon, Faust and Shortee, and more.
Genres mean nothing to Bassgate and you can hear that in this mix. At any Bassgate show, you can expect an all out assault of Electro, House, Breaks, Booty Bass, and Dubstep. Many of which are his own edits and full out remixes.

For this month, we are featuring an exclusive mode.radio set of the tech house sounds of Germany's own Radio. Rhubarbe.

Radio.Rhubarbe aka Min.Go & Hard.Y are a young DJ duo from the heart of Germany. By choosing the same residence in June 2009, they found each other, as both a united: the fascination with electronic music and the desire more than just music consumer to be.
Hard.y came in his hometown of Berlin early in contact with electronic music by the weekly broadcast "Rave Satellite". Today, he has become more quiet on music. However, as the name suggests, he is the driving part of the formation.

Make Himself - is also the motto of Min.Go . On 1998 with a age of 13, He has gotten his own 1210. Since 1999, he accompanied several projects, inspired by the Thuringian club scene and the well-represented vocal house music here. He placed the organization of various parties in the foreground of his work which he gained much experience. After the opening of the Village Club in 2008 his personal best project was reality. The here scheduled quality was quite in his senses, and led him, in the context of various After Hours, turning back to the turntable. Meanwhile, the House has become deeper and groovy influences still play a big role.

This "Stash" episode, along with the Debut Series, is featuring hot, summer house. For this episode, we are featuring the soulful house music of DJ Ramon RawSoul.

Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, he was reared with house music in the neighborhood. When he was coming up, house music came to widespread attention as records were imported directly from Chicago to dominate the playlist of Europe's most influential DJ's. He was there at the house party. He watched it grow with virtually no support from radio networks. Three house records forced their way into the top ten and Ramon Rawsoul was open.

He studied the "Father" of house music Ron Hardy, who had already effected a continuous music mix -- with reel-to-reel machines plus a dual-turntable setup -- at Chicago's Muzic Box. Rawsoul also listened to house music greats Frankie Knuckles, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Lil Louis, Gene Hunt, Pharris Thomas and Lee Collins.

Later, he partied with the now internationally renowned Dj Rush, Ron Trent and Ron Carroll in Kings and Queens and the Reactor. After discovering a natural talent and passion for spinning, he's been in love ever since.

Now living in Atlanta, Ramon is well-known for his "House in the Park" Parties which are a Memorial Day and Labor Day tradition. Enjoy!

Le Roux is a San Diego native who taught herself to DJ on some really crappy belt driven turn tables...that was 9 years ago and since then she's been playing parties and clubs around San Diego. Le Roux has also played in Las Vegas, Mexico and the Carribean. Her latest mix "Show Me the Roof" is a mixture of techno and trance goodness that's perfect for the summer.

Her favorite thing to do is have a rocking house party and invite her friends to come and play with her. Le Roux says, "When people dance is when I'm happiest. I love that ethereal connection that comes from being totally into what people are into...actually being able to change a mood with a song....to me, that is the art of the DJ." Agreed. Enjoy!

For this month's "Radio Ready" we are featuring DJ Christopher Sheehy. Christopher is veteran for the electronic music scene, starting back in 1998. At that time, Chris began dj’ing in Denver, CO where he incorporated the local west coast flavor into his unique sound with no limitations on style or genre. Known for his eclectic sets and seamless mixing, he blends a wide array of house, tech, tribal, progressive, and downtempo together in a way that is all his own.

Upon moving back to Atlanta in 2001, he and partner DJ Inc began hosting the Tempo parties at a series of different venues for over 7 years. During that time, Chris became a mainstay on the dj circuit, playing alongside some of the best local and international talent. At one time or another, he has been a featured performer at nearly every venue in the city, and with each performance his fan base continues to grow.

Christian Thomas aka K.So, originally a transplant from Chicago, got a taste of dance culture at the age of 16 in some of the up-and-coming clubs of the Windy City. Being exposed to early Chicago house and radio mixes, Christian was immediately smitten. In 1994, Christian moved to Atlanta and discovered it's budding house and club scene at events taking place at 688 Spring Street, the Masquerade, and/or events being promoted by Liquified, Pleasure, and OuterLimits to name a few. K.So has been known to blow up circles, enjoying a battle or 2 on the dance floor, and helping to keep the vibe at parties thick.

Now a DJ of 15 years, K-So's experience as a dancefloor personality have given him the ability to keep heads bouncing and the asses moving. With Kazell (Kevin Bazell) being K-So's main influence over the years, others include many ATL local old-skoolers, nu-skoolers, and friends most notably J-Luv, Nasir, Rick Sierra, Kia, Ulysses, Rob Dowell, Justin Brady, Chris Meadows, and Shortee & Foust and many more. Mode.Radio is 2 Years Old this month

Happy Birthday to mode.radio! 2 years ago, I started mode.radio because I had inherited recordings of my old drum 'n' bass radio show, Subterranean, and wanted to rebroadcast them once a month. Now, mode.radio has grown to 3 shows, bi-weekly, and has DJ sets from all over North America. The future looks bright and I hope to expand the quality of mixes and get mixes from all over the world :)

For this month, look out for mixes from Keiran, Sector, Poobah, Munir Amastha, a live set from Planet of the Drums, and an annual mode.radio mix!

The Stash Vol. 15--DJ Lexus Luthor aka Weatherman--Crowd Control

Lexus Luthor began his DJing career as DJ Weatherman in late 1996, playing Drum & Bass. At the time, he was selected to play alongside such D&B luminaries as High Contrast, Ed Rush, Matrix, Dieselboy, DJ Lee, AK1200, Aquasky, Mickey Finn, Total Science, Klute, Marcus Intalex, and many others. He played an instrumental role in his local dance music community, having been involved with a local record shop (Candy) since its inception in 1996. He progressed from clerk to store manager to head music buyer. He also ran several weekly events, including Tilt for over a year, Arson and a monthly called Heavy Session, as well as promoting numerous one-off events. Weatherman was also an integral member of the influential Playtheavy Kru for several years, as well as being involved with other production companies (Liquified, Format, Dash Productions and Cassini d'Vision).

He has since re-invented himself under the guise of Lexus Luthor. In this new incarnation, he has changed formats, now playing electro, nu-disco, maximal and whatever else catches his ear, even including the occasional heavy metal tune in his sets!

Lexus has also made the move from traditional DJing technology to laptop DJing and makes every effort to allow technology to expand the capabilities of his performance.

Debut Series vol. 26--J.Rogers--Live at Bassism SF, Dec. 2009

This Debut Series is featuring SF' own J.Rogers and his set from Bassism in December 2009. JRogers is a graduate of music studies in composition, conducting, and piano and has hada life-long obsession for the production and performance of electronic/dance music. His diverse sets of dubstep, minimal/techno, tech house, and everything in between are well-known in the Bay Area. J.Rogers' productions are no different as he releases track after track of genre-bending originals and remixes, supported by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Dubfire, Headhunter, Laurent Garnier, DZ, Stacey Pullen, XI, Paco Osuna, and many more. He stays busy as a member of the Surya Dub crew, co-founder of San Francisco's Blipswitch.net online community, and labelhead of the Blipswitch Digital record label.

The Stash Vol. 14--DJ Celeste Alexander--The Dirty South Mix

Over X-Mas Vacation, I was slipped this CD by a very good friend of mine, Ms. Natalie (shout-out). I fell so in love with the deep Chicago style house rhythms I had to put it on the Stash. This mix was exclusively done from a set she did in Atlanta in October 2009, so there's no tracklisting.

She started in 1982 under the encouragement of Steve "Silk" Hurley, learning how to mix under the tutelage of Andre Hatchett among many others. One of the first female dj's in Chicago, she signed on with Promoter Dave Risque' and Gucci Productions. After the first year of playing exclusively for Dave Risque' and proving that a female DJ Can hold her own in this male dominated industry, opportunities opened up along with her popularity. She has shared the decks over the years with dj's such as: Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Steve Hurley, Andre Hatchett, Craig Loftus, Greg Gray, Boo Williams, Farley “Jackmaster Funk”, Terry Hunter, Gene Hunt, Wayne Williams, Ron Carroll, Mike Dunn, Greg Gray, Chip E, Tyree Cooper, Glenn Underground, Pharris Thomas and many others.

In July 2007 was given her own Internet Radio Show on Cyberjamz.com. Cyberjamz is the longest running, highest rated internet radio station totally dedicated to house music. Her show The "Celestial Odyssey" runs every Saturday from 1-3pm (cst) and has a quickly become one of the top shows on the station.

Hailing from London, Shy FX is considered one of the pioneers of Drum 'n' Bass and Jungle. His track, "Shake Your Body" was a huge hit for him in 2002, ten years after he started out in the music scene.
